The Weskus Marathon: A Journey of Growth, Community and Legacy

By Craig Scott | CEO & Developer, Langebaan Country Estate

When the Weskus Marathon first took place in 2002, fewer than 400 runners lined up to test themselves against the beauty and challenge of the West Coast National Park. Today, 25 editions later, thousands of athletes and families gather each year to celebrate not only a race, but a tradition that has become part of the fabric of our community.

From Humble Beginnings to a Premier Event

The marathon was originally arranged by the Sanparks Honorary Rangers, starting at the Herberg offices inside the park. Just two years later, the Strandlopers Athletics Club took the reins and since 2013 Langebaan Country Estate has proudly partnered as title sponsor.

What makes this marathon unique is its setting: a race run inside a national park, where runners share the road with fauna, unique flora and the natural beauty of the lagoon. Over the years, the event has grown to offer four race options – 42.2km, 21.1km, 10km and 5km – making it accessible to elite athletes, casual joggers and families alike.

More Than a Race

The Weskus Marathon is not only about prize money or qualifying times for the Two Oceans and Comrades. It is about community.

  • For the town of Langebaan, it brings visitors, energy and recognition.
  • For the runners, it offers a chance to test themselves against nature, to run alongside wildlife and to be part of something unforgettable.
  • For the Estate, it is a way to open our doors, showcase our facilities and contribute to a tradition that uplifts the entire West Coast.

Importantly, proceeds from the marathon are ploughed back into conservation projects in the West Coast National Park through the Honorary Rangers. Every stride taken helps protect the environment we are privileged to enjoy.

As we celebrate the 25th edition, I am reminded that this marathon is a reflection of what we value most: resilience, community and growth. It is a race for all – whether you are chasing a qualifying time, running your first 5km, or simply soaking in the scenery.

At Langebaan Country Estate, we are proud to play our part in hosting and supporting this event. Together with the Strandlopers Athletics Club and the Honorary Rangers, we will continue to ensure that the Langebaan Country Estate Weskus Marathon remains not just a race, but a legacy for the West Coast.
